32 years is a strange length of time. It’s not “black and white” photo old, but long ago enough to let us judge with some authority. 1992 saw the launch of Windows 3.1, the release of Reservoir Dogs and the inauguration of Bill Clinton as US president.
Most designs from that time now seem dated, bland or a failed attempt at being futuristic. So when we find a 32-year-old car that seems perfectly comfortable today in the street - not a museum - we understand we can still make beautiful and practical art.
The 5th generation Honda Civic was offered as the EJ1 USDM coupe, with the higher spec models bearing the 1.6L VTEC engines which means yes. The design today remains unceremoniously recognizable, either as a maintained street specimen or on the set of Fast & Furious (albeit wearing a body kit).
Whilst its sister JDM EG6 hatchback has been made by everyone and their dog, we were amazed this little gem has not been made in premium 1:64.
Our design separates the diecast body and chassis above the visible baseline to highlight the trim around the body. We kept it stock with the wheel covers and no body kit or spoilers, because we trust Honda got it right in 1992 and we’re not going to argue. As usual, our separate parts for lights, free rolling wheels and crisp body contours are part of the Honda approved and licensed package.
